What makes good BPM Governance ...

Alan Earls recently published a Good lists to what comprises good BPM governance, to this list I would also add;

  • Ensure processes have an empowered process owner.
  • Ensure process initiatives deliver on strategic objectives
  • Have a clear set of over arching principles, this will help to prioritise projects
  • Have a governance design authority a mix of business and technical to advise and support process owners and oversee projects
  • Have a consistent methodology for delivering projects
  • Promote reuse of methods standards and processes applications and services
I would also ensure that there is a clear enterprise architecture (EA) framework that supports your BPM initiative. Something like IAF or TOGAF can seem heavyweight but can save you a lot of time and you can / should implement the EA incrementally, project by project as you do with your BPM initiative.
